EMOP XII – Turku,
Finland 2016
Led
by prof. Antti Oksanen
the bid for EMOP XII was presented in Romania and was accepted by the
European Federation
of
Parasitologists. It is now official that this event will
take
place, and that SBSP will be the hosting society. It is the hope that
the event will also attract participants from Russia. The local
organising committee is already taking shape and currently have
members from Finland, Sweden, and Estonia. Until an official website
will be established, news will be posted on the blog:
http://emopxii.blogspot.com and on Facebook
EFP Parasitic Disease
Threat Quick Response Committee
European
Center of Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) called
together society representatives, including the European Federation
for Parasitology (EFP), in Stockholm earlier this year. EFP was asked
to create a group of parasitologists in Europe that could take
immediate action in case of sudden outbreaks in Europe. It was
decided during EMOP XI that EFP has the support from the members to
create such a group of 15 individuals that will act as “network
nodes”.

Dear members,
We are proud to
inform that we have
revised our grant for our members to more easily exchange students
across borders. The grant is simple to apply for and the form and
instructions can be found on our front page. It is our hope
that this
grant will create an incentive for taking opportunities to
collaborate and learn from each other.
The opportunity is aimed at
student members, but is not excluding senior members. The board has
agreed to currently set the upper limit of support at 500 EUR and
maximum four grants will be given per year. We are very interested in
feedback from our members regarding this grant.
The board is
also very active in
organizing and attracting future parasitological conferences to our
region. The program of SBSP5 in Copenhagen in 2013 together with 8th
European Congress of Tropical Medicine & International Health
(ECTMIH)
is taken shape thanks to the dedicated local organizers and our
board representative Jakob Skov. The bid for EMOP XII is also being
smithed
and the old capital of Finland, Turku, has been selected for the
possible place for the event in 2016. SBSP is backing the bid as
hosting society and two of
our board members are participating in the organizing committee.

Dear
members,
Lots
of good news. It was an expressed wish of the society's members for the
board to promote SBSP to the world and attract new members. Here are
our most recent efforts:
First
of all, the arrangements are progressing smoothly for the 8th European
Congress of Tropical Medicine & International Health (ECTMIH) that
will be held in Copenhagen September 10-13th 2013 in joint
collaboration with SBSP5. It is going to be very interesting to see how
SBSP can benefit of designing a satellite event of such an important
meeting.
For
2016, we raise the stakes even further. On the encouragement of Antti
Oksanen we have agreed to commit to act as host organization for the
next bid for organizing the next European Multicolloquium of
Parasitology after Romania this year. The plan is to
offer Finland as
the obvious choice for EMOP in 2016.
In addition, we have taken
an active step to make electronic versions of the society's journal,
The Bulletin of the Scandinavian-Baltic Society for Parasitology, with
the help of Jorun Tharaldsen. The electronic version of the journal
will appear on our website's Archive-section.
P.S. Please check
that you have updated your links to our website's new URL, and feel
free to promote our Facebook-page in your networks!
